Independent Police Auditor Investigative Authority
In 2020, people took to our streets demanding accountability. The Reimagining Public Safety committee made the recommendation to remove investigations out of Internal Affairs. The MLF consultant’s report was received by the city council in December 2023. We demand action now.
The Beloved Community from People Acting in Community Together (PACT) is building power and momentum to create investigative power for the IPA. Currently, all investigations are done by Internal Affairs, which is within the San Jose Police Department, and we believe that is unjust and breeds unaccountability.
As recommended by the Reimagining Public Safety Committee, MOEEL LAH FAKHOURY LLP, and IPA Nurre, we demand that the city council commit to creating an investigative wing of the IPA and allocate the associated costs to hiring three investigators no later than June 2024.
Statewide Housing Crisis
Homelessness is on the rise in California. Rising rents, evictions, wage inequality, housing insecurity, and much more have created a perfect storm that pushes individuals and families to the brink of homelessness.
The Tenant Protection Act (TPA) delivered critical protections for some California renters. However, too many tenants remain unprotecte, rents are still allowed to be increased beyond what most renters can afford, and loopholes in the current law have led to widespread abuses.
We support SB 567 the Homelessness Prevention Act. This bill lowers the annual rent cap to the increase in the consumer price index (CPI) or 5%, whichever is lower. Provides greater specificity around the allowable “no fault” just cause for eviction to address rampant abuse of these provisions. Requires just cause to evict tenants from the beginning of a tenancy. Enhances tenants’ ability to defend themselves in eviction cases by requiring landlords to strictly comply with TPA. Expands both public and private enforcement of the TPA.
