June 1st was a powerful night of change for the City of San Jose, the County of Santa Clara, our community and the environment around the world!

PACT faith and grassroots leaders at Temple Emanu-El held a Community Action Meeting to call on the City and County to adopt and implement policies to ensure safe, responsible recycling of electronic waste.

These policies are needed to stop poisoning the world!  Without them, our local government and our community is contributing to e-waste being exported to poor countries and destroying the environment and health of millions of people - including children.

PACT won commitments from San Jose City Councilmember Ash Kalra and County Supervisor Liz Kniss' Senior Policy Analyst, Scott Strickland, for new policies and practices using e-Stewards certified recyclers. For more information on e-Stewards go to http://e-stewards.org/

Councilmember Kalraannounced his plans to present a memo to the City's Rules Committee the next day and thanked Temple Emanu-El and PACT for educating him about the problem and "telling me what I can do about it." Strickland also credited the group with getting the County to contract with only e-Stewards certified recyclers to handle employee e-waste.
