Mary Ellen and Mike Fox, Sr. An institution. A married couple who embody social justice. Mary Ellen and Mike have built a family, a business and a community. Throughout all their building, the guiding principles have been ethical judgments, kindness, fairness and creativity. PACT honors Mary Ellen and Mike for all they have given to their community family, and especially what they have done to improve the lives of those who have been less privileged.
Through their strong stands in politics, their creative participation in the arts, their strategic thinking with leaders in the education and health industries, their organizational talents in countless non-profit events and their business acumen in building a company that employs hundreds of workers, Mary Ellen and Mike Fox, Sr. are a model that beckons to us all.
2007 Community Builder Honoree
Fr. Paul Locatelli
President, Santa Clara University
For over 30 years, Father Paul Locatelli has been a respected and influential leader in Silicon Valley. Since 1988, Fr. Locatelli has been the President of Santa Clara University and this year, in addition, he was named Secretary for Higher Education for all Jesuit colleges and universities in the world. Father Locatelli also serves on the boards of numerous local, national and international organizations and has received many awards for his community leadership.
Under Fr. Locatelli's leadership, SCU has become a model university in the Jesuit tradition-a place of rigorous academics with a deep commitment to building more humane and just communities. From the Alexander Community Law Center to the Arrupe Partnerships for Community-based Learning, SCU trains thousands of current and future leaders to work for "the common good."
PACT's First Lifetime Award Honoree
Dr. Jose Carrasco
PACT Founding Organizer & Builder of PICO Grassroots Organizations Nationally
Dr. Jose Carrasco was the founding organizer of PACT in the 1970's. For the past 25 years, until his retirement last year, Dr. Carrasco has been a primary builder of the PICO National Network, which now includes nearly 50 organizations similar to PACT around the country. From Anchorage to Brooklyn, from El Salvador to Spain, Dr. Carrasco has helped launch, establish, and strengthen dozens of grassroots, multi-faith community organizations.
Dr. Carrasco is an Emeritus Professor at San Jose State University, where he taught and served as an administrator from 1968 though 2004 in the Schools of Education Humanities, Social Sciences and Social Work, including areas of Ehtnic Studies and Urban Planning. Dr. Carrasco was also a Visitng Professor with the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, CA.
Throughout his career, Dr. Carrasco has been a champion of everday people and their ability to act powerfully together for the common good.
